Saturday, September 10, 2016 @ 2PM - 5PM
STRIDE MAIN SPACE 1006 MACLEOD TRAIL SE (MAP) EXHIBITION SEPTEMBER 9 - OCTOBER 15, 2016 Join us on Saturday afternoon for the artist talk and an embroidery workshop led by Stride's exhibiting artist Kate Jackson. Jackson will speak about her fragile embroidery work included in the exhibition /NOTHING IS TOO EMPTY A PLACE TO GO, while teaching an embroidery workshop. This workshop will share with the participants an understanding of the process and the ideas within the work. Participants will learn five or six introductory embroidery stitches and create their own stitch sampler. During the workshop there will be plenty of time for casual and thoughtdul conversation. Topics of discussion will/may include stitch as meditation, repetition as a tool of discovery, and ways of creating healing grief rituals. All materials will be provided. Only limited spots of 20 will be available, so please send an RSVP to info@stride.ab.ca to sign up for the workshop. You are welcome to join us even if you are not participating in the workshop to chime into the discussion. KATE JACKSON works with fragile embroidery, using materials often too weak to withstand needle and thread. This gesture translates into themes of patience, grief, intimacy, and yearning. She was chosen to represent Canada at the 2009 Cheongju International Craft Biennale in South Korea, and was exhibited at the Museum of Vancouver as part of the Cultural Olympiad during the 2010 Winter Olympics. Recently Kate Jackson was an Artist in Residence at the Banff Centre, Alberta and the Craft & Design Studios at Harbourfront Centre, Toronto. She graduated from OCADU and lives in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
